Got here today and loving your reviews... but it was funny how you missed the origin of Bolero and actually most of the Leisure Suit Larry gags: Blake Edwards' "10". They are very specific on parodying/referencing that kind of decadent resort for middle aged men in crisis.
I like the game and its design more than you do, mostly because it goes all in to the admiration for the most grotesque aesthetics of the "winners" culture, but it is very reliant on those 70s/early 80s pop culture nods.
Thanks! I've never seen the movie (though I'm a big fan of Victor/Victoria), otherwise I'd probably reference it. Somehow it never crops up in any discussions on Al Lowe or his interviews, but the influence is probably there.
Larry is almost a caricature of Dudley Moore when you look at it. I am not going to defend 10 as a great film but, even when it's way more melancholic, it feels like Leisure Suit Larry if Larry wasn't a virgin and the puzzles were just a bit more straightforward.
