Great seeing some love for the Portis. I've watched that show but should re-view this particularly (and Roads, apparently, which I didn't know was so popular), thanks!

Edit: We all need a little more brown in our lives, too. ;)

I'm with you for the most part, but am puzzled why you don't include Tori Amos amont the 90's artists who bear comparison. Her vocal style, never mind her sublime melodic gift, is very literally breathtaking, and her songs are as emotionally explorative as anything I've seen from Portishead. "Winter", as played live at Montreux, would make an interesting comparison. Bet she could play her piano AND smoke a cigarette if she felt she really had to, but then songs about love for a father are a very different kettle of fish.

Maybe I'm just more in the mood for brown these days than I am for red...

But anyway, I'm not sure where the comparison comes from. Tori Amos is a disciple of the Kate Bush school of art-pop; Portishead come from a very different background altogether. Not all female singers of the Nineties should be compared to one another.

Too bad the sound quality is so spotty at times. Surely in the 90's they could have done better than this? It's not even this recording in particular, but Roads at 68 million views just gives me a headache and makes me run to the studio recordings.

It's just poor video conversion.

Here's a version of 'Roads' with perfectly fine audio (but, ironically, poor video - perfection is always just out of reach on Youtube):

Fair enough, but you mentioned Kate Bush, as if she could be compared in some way. Just adding my personal favourite, getting in a free plug. Still, I insist that she's sung any number of songs (especiall on Little Earthquakes) which are pretty out there, at least in the spirit of Portishead. Am I so wrong?

That's fine, nothing against Tori Amos.

But if we're talking free plugs now, Tori Amos can't hold a candle to Aimee Mann. :))
