I hate to bother you with a question that's not really related to the review in question, but I wanted to ask what other 50s blues artists would you recommend checking out to get into that whole scene. I've checked out some Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson II, but I don't really know where to go from there. Anyone else you recommend checking out?
Well, there's obviously tons of stuff, the only question is how deep one wants to go, some of these guys get samey earlier than others. Elmore James and Otis Rush, obviously. John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Little Walter for the harp playing, early B. B. King, Memphis Slim, Junior Wells... Late period stuff by Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James (though that's more like the Sixties already), quality acoustic recordings by Big Bill Broonzy, just too much to mention. Better to check out their biggest single hits and then dig deeper into the catalog if it appeals to you.
