Wait, weren't Hugo and Luigi two characters in Mario Bros? Anyway, loved your phonetics analysis of 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' and it does make sense. I wonder if music corporate teams today do research those things. I can imagine Taylor Swift sitting with Daniel Jones' dictionary, all of a sudden. Now, about the inheritance, I do dislike Plant's baby-baby cliché but boy do I prefer Sam's sweet voice in any case. The clones tend to lose quality I guess.

Umm, I think the Mario Bros were actually Mario and Luigi. But yes, I can definitely see where the association comes from. Put them in plumber garb, give them moustaches and see what happens:

I think music corporate teams are too busy with the magic of autotune these days to pay much attention to the intricacies of phonosemantics.

I didn't get this notification! Haha the Hugo thing was an invention of mine but so glad you found a link. I love that kind of thing (I call that hyperlinking, and it's not necessarily an internet thing, my Mom did it in the analog world, relating *everything* using history, entertainment and whatnot in lovely quirky ways). Yeah, autotune to the rescue, much easier. Recently I read two books from the engineers who worked in Rumours and Tusk. I thought the tape cutting and splicing was a thing from the 60s but in fact in the mid 70s with the crazy Lindsey trying to escape Pop clichés they did a lot of magic in that sense too way before ProTools - with 24 tracks though. It was an amazing read. Tons of coke included and soap opera: the complete package. PS: See I did the hyperlinking thing!

“So the next time somebody asks you the question, "what’s so great or special about Sam Cooke?", just say, "who else can juggle their oooh’s and aaah’s with such simple elegance and emotional depth?" (and then hit them on the head with something heavy while they’re busy trying to come up with an answer, take their money and run away).”

Was laughing my ass off to this at 3 AM 😂. Great review anyways
