Hm, I don't think "To Be Or Not To Be" is that bad. It was actually the first Bee Gees song I heard, on some kind of "Rock'n'Roll vol. 6" pirate CD, and while it seemed somewhat... strange, compared to e.g. The Searchers (which were on the same CD), it interested me enough to actually buy a random Bee Gees cassette when I saw it later. Which turned out to be "Still Waters" album, and for the longest time, I sneered at mentions of Bee Gees, because it was a record so boring and bereft of any interesting features I think I only ever tried listening to it maybe two times (the second to confirm the impression; it was confirmed).
That's comparable to becoming acquainted with the Beach Boys through "Student Demonstration Time". The Bee Gees never had an ounce of genuine rock'n'roll drive within them - not a crime in itself, but quite a travesty if you decide to officially go against your own nature on record.
"Helium Goat" Jesus, George :D But fair enough. It's quite fascinating, this band. I have some attachment to melodic, grandiose, dramatic music (My father listened to The Platters, that's imprinted in me, and 40s tangos!) so I feel their poignant allure (Horizontal, Odessa, Trafalgar, Mr Natural) or even their oversized energy at their best disco moments. On the other side, I love a rock band, and yes they're not, and they move from their best (Lush Pop? Chamber Pop) to creepy Adult Contemporary whenever they can. But hey I like Neil Diamond too (and that Barbra/Bee Gees record too but shh!) . So I prefer to think that they're a lucky accident that brings quite a few awesome rock-adjacent gems (Paul Williams did it only once and Phantom of The Paradise is fab). I should have gone to their concert in Buenos Aires though. I still feel like a spineless traitor. PS: Their "rock" piece was famously Down The Road which they apparently loved to perform in concert. I didn't hear that 1973 Berry thing! but I did this Beatles medley, did you? Love it. Funny enough as they sing the aforementioned This Boy there. Good taste! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMhoMrWE18A
