What’s new pussycat’s lyrics and vocal stylings are so bizarre I enjoy it in a kind of “so bad it’s good” way, but the rest of the album is forgettable, fine, I guess. Tom Jones really ain’t nothing special. Nice review.
I was previously unaware of the YT presence of the Tom Jones Show, so thanks for pointing me to that. I enjoyed pretty much all the vids, though often more for the novelty and sometimes bizzare mismatch (Tom and Joe Cocker?), not for the great music that ensued.
My favourite so far is with CSNY on 'Long Time Gone'. Very funny.
I'd never heard of P.J. Proby before, and, erm, looking at his Wikipedia there sure is a reason for that! Yeesh.
As for the question of "what is 'What's New Pussycat?' for"- have you heard the John Mulaney standup bit where he talks about going to a local diner and paying to play "What's New Pussycat?" on the jukebox 20 times in a row? That *must* be the telos of Tom Jones.
I think I was about 11 or 12 when I first heard Pussycat and I think it made me think of furries? Like Toms playin around with a girl in a cat costume. Maybe that's the demo they were going for...feline fetish freaks. Speaking of anthropomorphic mammals, I clicked on the Chipmunks and you're right, it's the definitive version. Although it's also strangely offputting and makes me wonder if Alvin et al were sneakily the most perverse cartoon ever. And the thumbnail that immediately followed it on my Yt feed pretty much sums up the feeling Tom must have had after singing it for five years...
Sorry I couldnt drop the screenshot into the comment so heres the video. The goofy grins kick in around 1:05https://youtube.com/watch?v=KAVpqOG-HDY&si=0dFrNn_ec9Fe8BEQ
